Biography/History: Robert Lee "Bobby" Dodd came to Georgia Tech in 1931 to serve as assistant backfield coach under Coach William Alexander. He would remain at Georgia Tech the rest of his career. He married Alice Davis, sister of one of his halfbacks, Wink Davis, in 1933. In 1944, Bobby was promoted to Head Coach, a position he would hold until 1966, when he retired to serve as Director of the Athletic Association until 1976. In 1976, he retired from that position, but remained at Tech as an Alumni Association consultant until his death in 1988. As a coach, Bobby Dodd compiled a win-loss record of 165-64-8, including a 9-4 bowl record that included eight straight bowl records. Six bowl records occurred in six consecutive seasons, from 1952-1956. Bobby Dodd's spectacular career led to his induction as a coach in the national Football Hall of Fame in 1993. He was already a member of the Hall of Fame as a player for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Bobby Dodd shared this double distinction in the Hall of Fame with only one other honoree--Amos Alonzo Stagg. Coach Dodd is remembered as much for his contributions to Tech and to society, including significant work with disabled citizens and fund raising for Georgia Tech. Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field, home of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets is was named for this coach--a man remembered for his honesty, integrity and humanity, as much as for his coaching skills.
