Biography/History: Johnnie Carl Hyder Class of 1937 Clermont, Georgia; General Science; "T" Club; Football, 2, 3; Baseball, 1, 2, 4; Basketball, 1, 2, 3, 4; Track, 1, 2, 3, 4; Cross Country, 3. Head basketball coach 1951-1973, resigned 1973 to remain in the Physical Education department. His 22 year record is 292-271 (36-20 over Georgia). During the first 6 years the team labored in an antiquated 2, 200 seat gym. After moving to the 6, 999 capacity Alexander Memorial Coliseum his record was 251-189. Hired by Bobby Dodd, who also toasted him at his retirement dinner. Known for being concerned more about the moral character of his players than their ability to dribble with either hand; more about their graduating than improving their jump-shots; more about producing good citizens than All-Americans. Never missed a game in 22 years at Tech. Known as the "Kentucky Killer" for ending Kentucky’s home winning streak in 1955 which also earned him the name "Adolph Rupp killer" (the Kentucky coach) by beating him more frequently than any other coach. He directed his 1970 and 1971 Yellow Jackets into NIT tournaments at Madison Square Garden. Coached for 33 years, with 28 being at Tech. Upon retireing he remained active, teaching Phys Ed, and in 1973 he coached the east team in their round robin tournament in Hawaii; he helped conduct a basketball clinic in Brazil sponsored by Partners of America, People-to-People Exchange Program.
